Vega launch site > Entry into service
Vega’s targeted 2012 entry into service will add a highly capable, economically efficient lightweight launcher to the Arianespace family of commercial launch vehicles.
It meets the market requirement for cost effective access to polar and low-Earth orbits for payloads serving the scientific, Earth observation and institutional sectors.
Costs are being kept to a minimum by using advanced low-cost technologies, applying European industry experience in solid rocket motors, and by optimizing the synergy with existing production facilities used for Ariane launchers.
Vega has been designed as an in-line, single-body launcher with three solid propulsion stages, plus a liquid propulsion upper module used for attitude and orbit control, and satellite release. In contrast to most small launchers, Vega will be able to place multiple payloads into orbit.
