“Satellite Executive of the Year” reception

Washington, D.C.

Arianespace continued its tradition of sponsoring the annual “Satellite Executive of the Year” reception in Washington, D.C., which honors an industry executive selected by Via Satellite magazine for contributions to the telecommunications sector.

For this year’s event – held during the Satellite 2012 conference and exhibition – Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall introduced the newest “Satellite Executive of the Year” honoree: Iridium Communications CEO Matt Desch.

“Under Matt’s leadership, Iridium not only has become a more stable company, it has established itself as a growing player in the mobile satellite services market,” Le Gall said in remarks to a large crowd at the reception.  “Matt Desch has certainly made his shareholders happy with bigger revenues and profits, but more importantly, he has really made the world a safer place with Iridium’s service. First responders – like firemen, police, disaster response teams and the military – all rely on his satellite phones. Calling for help has never been easier, because of Iridium.”

Le Gall called attention to Desch’s “open door” policy with his staff, and noted the executive also performs what his colleagues refer to as “fly-bys” – visiting many employees in the company on a weekly basis.

“This is not surprising, given the fact that Matt is a licensed pilot, who loves to fly. No doubt, it takes the calm nerves of a seasoned pilot to lead a mobile satellite company, especially at a time when there is a great deal of economic turbulence,” he added.  “But I am told Matt’s greatest virtue is his ability to inspire the employees of Iridium to do great things. Some people can write a great business plan, but not everyone has the skill to put that plan into action. Cleary Matt is the rare example of someone who can do both.  For that, he truly deserves the title of ‘Satellite Executive of the Year.’”

Desch joins the ranks of industry executives who have received the “Satellite Executive of the Year” recognition since its creation in 1988, which includes Le Gall as the honoree of 2006.
