Annual reception in Taiwan

November 4, 2009
Taipei, Taiwan

Arianespace’s annual reception in Taiwan marked the 11th anniversary of its first launch for Chunghwa Telecom – which orbited the ST-1 telecommunications satellite in 1998 – and also provided an opportunity to look forward to the next mission, targeted in 2011 with ST-2 spacecraft.

The event was attended by managers from Chunghwa Telecom, along with representatives from Taiwan’s space sector, the country’s National Space Organization, and personnel from the European foreign trade offices in Taipei.

Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall said the ST-2 launch will build on the relationships established more than a decade ago with the ST-1 mission, and provides another opportunity for Arianespace to serve the region’s growing telecommunications capacity requirements.

The ST-2 launch contract was announced in June at the 2009 Paris Air Show, with Arianespace being selected by ST-2 Satellite Ventures Pte Ltd (STS) – a joint venture of Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. and Chunghwa Telecom Company Ltd.

This new satellite will have a liftoff mass of more than 5,100 kg. for its orbiting by Ariane 5, and is to carry C and Ku band transponders.  When operational, it will provide fixed and mobile satellite services, as well as voice and data IP-based services for businesses.   Users are to include direct-to-home service providers, as well as shipping companies in Asia and the Middle East.
