Satellite Executive of the Year reception – Satellite 2009

Arianespace today honored Pradman Kaul, the chairman and CEO of Hughes Network Systems, for his designation as Via Satellite magazine’s “Satellite Executive of the Year.”
At a reception during the Satellite 2009 conference in Washington, D.C., Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall acknowledged Kaul’s ability to anticipate the satellite market’s needs, thereby positioning his company as a top provider of satellite-delivered broadband services.
Under Kaul’s leadership, Hughes Network Systems grew from its origins in a Maryland garage to a company that holds more than 50 percent of the global enterprise VSAT market.
“From these modest beginnings 30 years ago, Hughes Network Systems has been driven by Pradman’s tireless vision and leadership – and the company reached a new pinnacle of achievement with the introduction of its SPACEWAY 3 broadband satellite,” Le Gall explained. “I am very proud that Arianespace played a role in getting this pioneering broadband spacecraft into orbit, launching it aboard an Ariane 5 on August 14, 2007.”
Kaul thanked Le Gall for SPACEWAY 3’s successful orbiting, noting that Arianespace demonstrated its flexibility by providing an Ariane 5 launch slot for the 6,700-kg. relay platform on relatively short notice.
"Jean-Yves and I had a meeting at this same conference in February 2007, and I explained we were in a bit of trouble… we had a satellite to be launched in the June/July timeframe, but we didn’t have a launch vehicle at that time because, unfortunately, we went with another launch supplier,” Kaul explained. “So we met with Jean-Yves, who committed to launch it by August 15. Arianespace came through, and like clockwork, the satellite went up on August 14. I am very grateful for the performance of Arianespace, which was wonderful.”
