Arianespace's fifth Ariane 5 mission of 2008 enters its final countdown

The final countdown is now underway for tonight's dual-payload Ariane 5 mission.

Activities at the Spaceport began with this morning's electrical systems checkout, and are being followed by the fueling of Ariane 5's cryogenic main stage.

This fifth Ariane 5 mission of 2008 will orbit the Superbird-7 and AMC-21 satellites, carrying a total weight of more than 8,000 kg. – including approximately 7,270 kg. for the two payloads.

Superbird-7 will be utilized by Tokyo-based Space Communications Corporation as a successor to its current Superbird-C satellite. The Mitsubishi Electric Corporation-built spacecraft is to provide a wide range of Ku-band telecommunications services with enhanced performance.

AMC-21 was manufactured by Thales Alenia Space incorporating the Orbital Sciences STAR-2 satellite bus, and is designed for comprehensive Ku-band service over the 50 U.S. states, along with high-power coverage for the Gulf of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
