The successful Ariane 5 mission in photos

August 14, 2007

Today's successful Ariane 5 launch delivered a payload lift performance of more than 8,840 kg. into geostationary transfer orbit. This included the weight of SPACEWAY 3 (6,075 kg.) and BSAT-3a (1,980 kg.), along with the satellites' installation hardware and the SYLDA 5 deployment system, which enables Ariane 5 to carry two passengers on a single launch.

The images below highlight the Ariane 5 during final preparations for its nighttime launch. (Click on the images for a larger version):

Ariane 5 is shown in atop its mobile launch table in this profile view of the ELA-3 launch zone. Leading into ELA-3 is the final curve of the dual rail track on which Ariane 5 launch tables are transferred during their assembly and launch preparation. Today's successful mission was the 33rd flight of an Ariane 5.

The "business end" of Ariane 5 is detailed in a close-up of the vehicle atop its mobile launch table. The Vulcain 2 cryogenic main engine extends from Ariane 5's central core stage, which is straddled by the launcher's two solid rocket motors. Pipes visible to the left are part of the water deluge system, which is activated during ignition and liftoff to provide acoustic damping on the launch pad.

Ariane 5's payload "stack" with SPACEWAY 3 and BSAT-3a measures 17 meters tall. SPACEWAY 3 is in the upper passenger position, installed underneath Ariane 5's payload fairing. This fairing was installed over the BSAT-3a satellite, which is riding in the lower position. Visible below the payload "stack" is Ariane 5's cryogenic upper stage, which is supplied propellant through a pair of cryogenic feed arms that extend from the mobile launch table's integrated mast.

With its flame trail reflected in the water, Ariane 5 ascends from Europe's Spaceport on a highly accurate trajectory to deploy SPACEWAY 3 and BSAT-3a. Liftoff of the heavy-lift vehicle occurred right on time at 8:44 p.m., enabling Arianespace to meet its commitment of orbiting Hughes Network Systems' SPACEWAY 3 satellite by mid August.
