A large Ariane 5 scale model now adorns the headquarters of Hughes Network Systems as a symbol of the North American satellite operator’s strong and successful working relationship with Arianespace.
The model was unveiled earlier this week in Germantown, Maryland, by Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall and Pradman Kaul, CEO of Hughes Network Systems.
Arianespace orbited Hughes’ first satellite, SPACEWAY 3, with the heavy-lift Ariane 5 in August 2007 – delivering on a launch contract signed just six months earlier. This on-target mission cemented the two companies’ relationship and demonstrated Arianespace’s flexibility and capacity to meet market changes.
Hughes reinforced its confidence in Arianespace’s launch Service & Solutions this year, selecting the company to orbit its powerful broadband satellite Jupiter™.
The new spacecraft will be launched from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana during the first half of 2010. This upcoming mission will once again utilize the workhorse Ariane 5 launcher.
Jupiter is to weigh approximately 6,100 kg. at liftoff and, following its launch, will help Hughes deliver even higher speed service offerings in the North American market while augmenting the operator’s Ka-band satellite technology leadership worldwide. The satellite is designed with a bent-pipe, multi-spot beam Ka-band architecture that will offer 100+ Gbps of throughput.
