Community association organizes a Spaceport visit for engineering students from “Ariane cities” in Europe

February 3, 2009

A group of 50 engineering students from cities in six countries with links to the Ariane program visited the Spaceport today for an on-site briefing about European space cooperation.

This annual visit was organized by the Community of Ariane Cities, an organization that has been bringing local administrations and industries together since 1998 to promote educational, cultural and political cooperation among cities – in particular, with their younger citizens.

Attendees at today’s Spaceport briefing are alumni of the Community of Ariane Cities’ various educational programs, such as its month-long summer school for engineering students that is hosted each year by a university in a different member city.  This year’s visiting group represented the cities of Augsburg, Germany; Barcelona, Spain; Bordeaux, France; Bremen, Germany; Madrid, Spain; Toulouse, France; Turin, Italy; and Zurich, Switzerland.

The Spaceport’s tour included detailed briefings and visits of the Spaceport’s facilities, including the Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega launch sites, as well as the Jupiter mission control center and the Galliot telemetry station.

Arianespace is a founding member of the Community of Ariane Cities, and continues to be an active participant in its programs and activities.
