The ESC-A upper stage is integrated on Ariane 5

Preparations for Flight 164 with Arianespace's heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA marked another milestone this week as the ESC-A upper stage was mated atop the launcher.

164hissage_smThe ESC-A upper stage is new for Ariane 5 and uses the proven third stage HM-7B engine that has provided years of reliable service on Ariane 4.

Flight 164 will carry two passengers: the XTAR-EUR X-band communications satellite, along with the multi-purpose test Sloshsat/Maqsat B2 payload combination.

XTAR-EUR will be operated by the XTAR joint venture company of Loral Space & Communications and HISDESAT, S.A., while the Sloshsat/Maqsat B2 payload was developed by a European team for microgravity experimentation and imaging of the Ariane 5’s initial climb-out.
